PostSubject: Salt Water   Sat May 23, 2015 1:42 pm

In the past i have only given my crabs fresh water or fresh water with a pinch of salt. But since getting my new crabs I have been using the recommended 2 dishes, one salt and one fresh. To anyone not providing their beloved hermies with both salt and fresh water, please do so. There is no excuse for hermit crabs dying because of salt deprivation. And adding salt to their food is not a suitable alternative.

I have not been doing this long enough to determine any long term benefits, but I have noticed a sharp increase in activity.

I recommend Instant Ocean Sea Salt (http://amzn.com/B0002AQGII) it is very cheap and comes highly recommended. The smallest pack (10 gallon) is only $7 and will last forever, so providing your friends with something they NEED to survive is at little cost to you.

Keep your hermies healthy! Hermit crab eyeroll

I've done a bit of research on water, and I've discovered that most tap water is chlorinated, and chlorine kills crabs. I imagine our well water is not chlorinated, but does it come into contact with copper pipes? My hermie needs fresh water!

But do I have copper pipes? I don't want to have to treat water, and I definitely can't afford Deer Park.

Accually, it may not matter:

Hermit Crab Association wrote:
A dechlorinator removes the chemicals from tap and bottled water that would otherwise harm a hermit’s gills. These chemicals could also be toxic to drink depending on the levels in the water. Well water that has not gone through a treatment process does not contain these chemicals and can be used without worry so long as it's been tested and is safe for human use.

But I will check all the same.

Actually, I think if the pipes were copper, Carlos would be sick, if not dead. So I doubt they are.
