PostSubject: Temperature/Humidity   Sun May 24, 2015 3:13 pm

I am now attempting to provide optimal care for my little E, and I want to know what I need to do about temperature/humidity.

My thermometer isn't very exact and is located in the middle of my tank. It reads about 75 degrees, which I believe is too cold. I am considering investing in a heat bulb and a thermostat. I dream of someday owning a Strawberry, so should I just get a UVA/UVB bulb? Would a heat pad work? I read that one side needs to be warmer, while the other side needs to be cooler. I am wondering if I need a more accurate thermometer or two, or maybe a digital thermometer/hygrometer.

Humidity is something I need to improve drastically. I know I need to purchase a hygrometer (Does this look good?) , but should I also purchase a humidifier or a fog machine? I need a good way to keep the humidity constant, but not outlandishly expensive.

For the heat/ UV I reccomend this: http://amzn.com/B00CYDE8IG. For $35 it combines UVA, UVB, heat, and a daytime light all in one.

For the hygrometer/ thermometer I recommend this: http://amzn.com/B004PBB1JE. It combines both for only $8 and a lot of people say they use it for hermit crabs.

I have no problem just spraying mine until the hygrometer reaches the level I need. And unless you want to try to jury-rig something, yes, a humidifier will be outlandishly expensive.

Thanks!

Sorry, I have two more questions.

Do I need two thermometers, one on each side? or should I just go with one?

Does he NEED UVA/UVB?

No, you only need one thermometer. Two is only recommended for a big (55+ gal.) tank. But that thermometer will be more accurate than the one you already have.

If you want him to live very long, yes.
Without UVB he will have a vitamin B3 deficiency. Adding UVA will increase activity and promote feeding, which will be helpful as Es are known for being picky.

I found out here that UVB bulbs cannot be obstructed by anything (plastic wrap, which I would need for proper humidity, glass, plexiglass, wire mesh, etc.). So essentially I would have to cut my lid, or I'd be losing about 40% of the UVB that this bulb would give off. They also said that it can cause severe sunburn. That would definitely be a problem. Is there any other way that I can give him Vitamin B3?

I think you mean that most things obstruct it.

Either way, screen will only obstruct about 20%, so I wouldn't bother cutting it. It will only cause sunburn if you put it too close to him, the instructions will tell you how far.

I think you misread the article, UVB is highly recommended if you want to keep your crabs healthy.

Yes, but plastic wrap would obstruct another 20%, and the bulbs only last for a year.

The bulb shouldn't be covered by plastic wrap. scratch

The lid would be covered in plastic wrap for humidity, otherwise it would escape.

Usually only part of the lid is covered, otherwise the humidity will be too high, causing mold to grow.

This says that the fixture should be SUSPENDED over the tank. Hmmmmm... Yet another necessary purchase.

That is only if you have climbing toys, etc. directly under the lamp. In the picture of the back of the box it shows the lamp SITTING directly on the screen of a 10 gallon tank.

Yesterday I picked up the hygrometer/thermometer you recommended. I also got a cuttlebone and some moss.

I got them from Petsmart. The hygrometer was on sale. Sorry, I'm out of dough. I bought a Lego set.
